With the arrival of longer, brighter evenings and warmer weather, South Yorkshire Police officers have re-iterated the zero-tolerance approach to anti-social driving as part of unorganised car meets.
Recently, roads policing officers responded to three car meets and cruises in Doncaster and Sheffield and acted, closing the road, holding drivers in, until all checks of their vehicles were complete.
Roads Policing Inspector Matt Collings said: “We accept this is a genuine interest and hobby for some people, and it is possible to engage in responsible car meets without breaking the law or impacting our local communities.
“We are willing to work with you to hold safe, organised meets, and appreciate those who work alongside us, but sadly there are those who see our roads as a private racetrack.
“Not only do they put themselves, their friends and the wider public at significant risk, but they also make residents’ lives a misery with the noise and anti-social behaviour.
“We will not tolerate this on our roads. We will act and our activity will continue to step up as we move towards the summer months.”
Officers have a range of tools at their disposal for those people intent on putting the lives of other road users at risk, from prosecutions to vehicle seizures. Details of individuals’ involvement can be sent to their insurance companies which can lead to insurance policies being invalidated.
Do the right thing, work with us and increase everyone’s safety.
