South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership
  • Safer Driving at 60+

The population of the UK is ageing and the number of older drivers is increasing steadily as this happens. Casualty data for South Yorkshire shows that whilst driver casualties of all ages are decreasing over time, car driver casualties aged 65+ have increased. Although this group is less likely to be involved in a collision they are, because of their age and fragility, far more likely to be injured as a result. Many older drivers modify their driving habits, to reduce their exposure to difficult driving environments, so avoid night time driving and motorways. However, with a reduction in miles driven, the risk per mile traveled for this age group can increase.

    Safer driving 60+

The Safer Driving @ 60+ sessions aim to help older drivers keep driving safer, for longer. The sessions will help them to brush up on their highway code knowledge, learn more about new initiatives such as Smart Motorway driving, consider aspects of the aging process that could impact on their driving abilities and offer ways to address these changes. It includes a classroom session, a chance to engage with professionals and specialists about a range of issues that could affect driving and importantly offers a practical on-road driving assessment with an approved driving instructor.

Sessions take place at the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Training and Development Centre in Sheffield. Those taking part will have the opportunity to visit a market place of stalls where professionals and specialists can promote their services and products, each one of which aims to help the driving task become easier and safer for older drivers.
